Success Stories

Metro Orlando Campus

The Ana G. Méndez University System’s Metro Orlando Campus offers the only dual language accelerated program for adults in the nation. Courses are based on equal teaching in English and Spanish, which means that each class dedicates the same amount of time for each language. In this way languages are alternated to ensure that each course is offered in English 50% and Spanish 50%. This innovated educational system shapes competent and bilingual professionals that acquire the necessary resources to satisfy the demands of globalization and stand out in the working world.

In accordance with the demands of these times of overloaded schedules and multiple responsibilities, the Ana G. Méndez University System has managed to accommodate its services to the needs of local students. For this reason, classes meet only once a week for four hours and are offered mornings, evenings, and weekends. Academic periods run every five or eight weeks. It is important to point out that all of the academic and support services are provided in English and Spanish, which creates a comfortable student atmosphere and stimulates learning.

To be eligible for the program, applicants must be 23 years or older, have attempted or completed at least 24 credits in a post-secondary institution and have at least three years of work experience. Upon admission, the student will take placement tests in English and Spanish. These evaluations help determine a student’s language proficiency for subsequent placement at the appropriate level: immersion, developmental, or first year.

The non-traditional Metro Orlando Campus opened its doors in September 2003 with 125 students; it now has more than 1,200 students enrolled. Two years later, in June 2005, the first group of 32 students obtained their degrees becoming pioneers by being the first to complete a dual language university education in the United States. To date a total of 997 students have received their bachelor or master’s degrees in the Ana G. Méndez University System’s accelerated, dual language program.
